3 Causes Of Miscarriage

3 causes of miscarriage

The causes of miscarriage are foreign to our will. The pregnancy is abruptly terminated, resulting in the death of the fetus. Unfortunately, this kind of abortion is the one that has the highest probability of occurring, and it is widespread in our society.

Although this is an uncomfortable and delicate subject, it is necessary to be well informed about it, both to guide and help another person and for ourselves. In this sense, knowing the causes of miscarriage can be very useful.

What is miscarriage?

As has already been said, with spontaneous abortion we mean the phenomenon that violently ends the pregnancy,  within the first 12-20 weeks of gestation. In general, its characteristics are the following:

  • Spontaneous abortion is  sudden
  • Sudden
  • Violent
  • Symptomatic
  • Fatal (for the fetus, in most cases)

Statistically, 8 out of 10 miscarriages occur in the first few weeks, before the completion of the third trimester. More than 20% of diagnosed pregnancies end in miscarriage.

3 causes of miscarriage

Miscarriage can happen for a variety of reasons, based on the woman’s health and other factors. Of course, there is not always a single cause: several problems often arise. However, one can speak of a predominant cause.

What are the causes of miscarriage?

Several harmful habits endanger our pregnancy and could cause us to lose our baby. Mainly, therefore, the causes of spontaneous abortion can be the following three.

Genetic inheritance

Generally speaking, genetic abnormalities are responsible for most miscarriages. According to experts, when a natural abortion occurs for the first time, in the majority of cases it is attributed to  chromosomal abnormalities.

The main errors in transcription of the genetic code concern the alteration of the number of chromosomes,  which can prevent the fetus from developing normally. In the absence of healthy development, the fetus dies.

In this case, the genetic inheritance of our ancestors prevents the genes needed to continue developing in the fetus. In other words,  translocation occurs following fertilization, which is why pregnancy only progresses to a certain stage.

Health ailments

When problems arise relating to the mother’s health, the inconveniences may be greater. We refer to any kind of anomaly, alteration or pathogenic process that involves our body before and during pregnancy. The main complaints are:

A doctor explains the causes of miscarriage to a couple.

  • Infections such as hepatitis, toxoplasmosis or rubella, to name the most lethal.
  • Uterine myomas or fibroids, especially those that are large and have a problematic location.
  • Complications related to hypertension, especially in cases of preeclampsia.
  • Hormonal changes associated with thyroid disorders.
  • Congenital malformations of the uterus or cervix.
  • Abnormal growth of the fertilized egg, a phenomenon better known as “molar pregnancy”.

Lifestyle

Furthermore, the evolution of pregnancy is also conditioned by a series of external factors that can directly affect its normal development. For this reason, the care of the pregnant woman must be complete.

Among the factors related to the mother’s lifestyle, we must focus mainly on  those that jeopardize the health of the pregnant woman and the fetus.

According to some studies, significant risks arise from the consumption of the following substances:

  • High levels of caffeine.
  • Drug use.
  • Alcohol intake.
  • Tobacco use during pregnancy.

As for the natural alteration of lifestyle,  even high levels of stress are considered risky. In this sense, stress increases the release of hormones such as corticotropin, which must be present in the uterus to facilitate contractions during childbirth.

However, stress itself is not usually considered a cause of miscarriage; however, the way in which the mother reacts to stressful situations is. For example, when faced with a particularly stressful situation, the expectant mother may adopt negative behavior or habits that are unhealthy for a pregnancy.
