If you are pregnant, sooner or later there will come a time when  you will find yourself struggling with yourself and the bed during the night, looking for the best positions to sleep in pregnancy. Gradually, this scene will become the usual premise of your sleep.

Unfortunately, for most pregnant women, the normal positions they have adopted throughout their lives to help them sleep will not be of much benefit, because the belly will continue to grow and prevent different postures from being adopted.

You may be wondering why sleeping like you always did is no longer possible. There are actually several reasons, but in most cases  the main cause is due to the increase in size of your belly, as well as other physical and emotional changes that pregnancy involves.

The good news is that  there are also a number of suitable sleeping positions during pregnancy that any pregnant woman can practice. They will certainly be of great help to remarry without having to constantly toss and turn on the bed.

Positions for sleeping during pregnancy

Many pregnant women have chosen one of the following sleeping positions. Try them all and find out which one suits your body best.

Lying on your left side

This is the position most recommended by maternity experts. Sleeping on the left side, in fact,  makes blood and nutrients flow more easily to the uterus  and, consequently, to your baby. Furthermore, it has been verified that thanks to this position your kidneys will be able to eliminate waste and fluids more easily.

One of the advantages of this pose is that it  will be of great help in keeping your spine straight. This way you will avoid putting all the weight of one leg on the other. Furthermore, by adopting this position you can use large pillows, on which you can rest your belly. This position will offer you more safety while you sleep.

Lift your feet

As your belly continues to grow, a rather uncomfortable problem may arise when you fall asleep: leg cramps and swollen feet. If you have a tendency to suffer from poor circulation and swollen legs, you can try sleeping by keeping them raised, resting them on some pillows. This will facilitate blood circulation and help prevent the appearance of varicose veins, stinging or cramps in the lower part of the body.

Semi-inclined posture

If during pregnancy you suffer from ailments such as gastritis, gastroesophageal reflux or pain related to poor digestion, do not despair: these are normal symptoms. Acquiring a semi-sitting or inclined position, thanks to the contribution of pillows or support cushions, will allow you to lighten that sensation and be able to rest.

What positions should be avoided during pregnancy?

Sleeping face up

This position can cause you pain and even serious back problems. In addition, it negatively affects the quality of breathing and the digestive system, and promotes the appearance of hemorrhoids and low blood pressure. It can even cause a decrease in blood circulation to your heart and that of your baby.

Together with the previous one, this is one of the least recommended postures for sleeping during pregnancy. Sleeping on your stomach could cause poor circulation, among other things, due to the fact that  all the weight of the uterus, intestines and inferior vena cava falls on your back, also damaging your digestion.

In addition to trying the postures for sleeping during pregnancy that have been described, you can also talk to your doctor and consult him on the benefits and contraindications of the different positions. Keep trying different sleeping positions until you are comfortable and relaxed. Don’t forget that getting a good rest will be good for both you and your baby.
